'Back End of a Honk, Can be used in variety of situations based on tone, volume and voice inflection'
Venue: Contest
Situation:

Kyle Rinella
'A constant and very common note used by Geese. Needs to be used with different tones with different emphasis placed on each moan note. Used as a comeback, feeding, aggression, and a lonesome note. Volume and tone way heavily on the situation it is used in. Back bone to every note. Can be used in contest to fill holes or gaps in a sequence.'
Venue: Hunting, Contest
Situation: Comeback, Laydown

Fred ZinkListen
'Typically done by the male (gander) to show dominance. A great call to use for many calling situations especially with clucks. Many great callers use this note in routines and meat calling to gain air. This note allows a small break in a rhythm so a caller can gain a small breath of air to continue the flow of the routine.'
Venue: Hunting, Contest
Situation: Comeback, Laydown

Kelley PowersListen
'Can be short variations for active sounds, long drawn out moans simulating a “lone single just lost his/her mate, and soft moans that I call ground talk. The moan is the most underrated a caller can make and actually I think that not much emphasis is spent on getting creative with the different true natural vocalizations one can recreate.'
Venue: Hunting, Contest
Situation: Comeback, Laydown

Scott ThreinenListen
'The most used call by a goose!!! When a goose is murmuring…he’s moaning….when he honk’s….he moan’s. The backbone to every note!'
Venue: Hunting, Contest
Situation: Comeback, Laydown

Craig McDonaldListen
'The second part of the deadly cluck and moan. Very practical call for many aspects of goose calling. Mixed in with clucks it is used in almost all situations.'
Venue: Hunting, Contest
Situation: Greeting, Comeback, Laydown

Chad BeldingListen
'The moan is used by a hunter to give confidence and realistic sounds to the approaching flocks. There are many different variations of the moan and they can be made by dropping your jaw and creating different size air cavities inside of your mouth. I use them in between clucks, at the beginning of my hails, to introduce my laydown work in contests, within my laydown talk and murmurs. During contests, it is important not to roll your clucks and moans together. Geese make different distinct sounds when they are talking and a caller should do the same.'
Venue: Hunting, Contest
Situation: Greeting, Comeback, Laydown

Sean MannListen
'The moan is not the same as a cry. It is a soft sound used to finish geese. For more on the cry, see cry under “other notes”.'
Venue: Hunting, Contest
Situation: Laydown

Wade WallingListen
'Moaning is a thing that will kill you geese and win you contests. There are many different moans you can do. Raspy old goose moans, whinny younger birds. Can be used with a cluck or other note as a double cluck. Blown very aggressively for a comeback…or very soft for a sexy finishing sound. You can use a moan in all the parts of your calling. It combined with spaced out clucks are the best basic sounds to kill geese with.'
Venue: Hunting, Contest
Situation: Greeting, Comeback, Laydown

Big Sean HammockListen
'Used to turn birds in the field, and used in some laydown work for hunting and contest. Many differnet pitches and variations can be blown.'
Venue: Hunting, Contest
Situation: Comeback

'I do the moan if the geese are leaving me or I will do it when the geese have their feet down'
Venue: Hunting, Contest
Situation: Comeback, Laydown

Josh NeuwillerListen
'The moan is a note geese use for communicating to each other and can be used for a comeback call in hunting and contest situations. If done quietly and softly, it can be used during the laydown portion of a contest routine.'
Venue: Hunting, Contest
Situation: Comeback, Laydown

Field HudnallListen
'The moan is again a way that geese show aggression and or communicate among other geese. Typically you will hear the gander moaning and the female clucking in communication sequences. This is a great note for finishing geese.'
Venue: Hunting, Contest
Situation: Comeback, Laydown
